Lunch Tour in Kagurazaka ランチツアー in 神楽坂

Each month, there are lunch tours to places in immediate walking distance from Coto Japanese Academy. In May, we will visit the old restaurant Torijaya, famed for its “udonsuki.”This tour’s feature will be hot pot with udon as centerpiece. The pot will be brimming with chicken, vegetables, and shrimp. Everyone can share this dish. The sharing of hot pot itself is an element of Japanese culture. Let’s experience it together!

If you are interested in learning how to draw each and every strokes in the Japanese Kanji character, this event is for you! Every month, Coto Japanese Academy will hold a calligraphy class. Learn the basics of calligraphy along with the artistic way of writing kanji, you will be practicing on three characters as shown below. The instructor, Wakana Shingae, is a professional calligrapher. Grab this opportunity to experience the traditions of Japan and participate in our calligraphy class! Booking available at the reception (3F).

Oohirayama Hiking & Onsen Bus Tour in Tochigi
大平山 ハイキング&温泉バスツアー in 栃木県
Sunday, May 22nd, 7:30-19:00 in Oohirayama, Tochigi
Have you hiked in the mountains of Japan before? If not, join us this May to a hiking tour at Oohirayama, the south of Tochigi prefecture. Hike and unveil the rich history behind this 341 meters tall mountain. From the Kenshindaira, a spot located near the peak of the mountain, you may enjoy the breathtaking views of the wide Kanto plain and the mountains that seem floating in a sea of mist. This scenery reminds of the little islands in the coast of Matsushima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. If the weather is in favor, you may even see the Mount Fuji! After the hiking, rejuvenate yourself physically in an Onsen! Two big experiences in the same day, what are you waiting for?

B.Y.O: Lunch, rain jacket, sunglasses, hiking shoes (jogging shoes are also okay), mats and trash bags (Trash can not be discarded and must be taken home) as well as towels for the onsen. We will update about all of you about the details soon!
Please note that tattooed people may not be able to enter the onsen.
Japanese Ink Painting -Sumi-e Class 墨絵(すみえ)クラス

Take a brush and a piece of washi paper and learn how to draw the typical Japanese ink paintings called Sumi-e! Practice this ancient art in the studio of the instructor Honda Yuta-san, whose father was a recognized Sumi-e painter, Honda Toyokuni. Don’t worry if you have never painted with ink and a brush before, the technique of the Sumi-e is easy to familiarize with and you will be able to draw cool paintings on that day! This May, we will practice how to draw bamboo, one of the most basic of Sumi-e painting.
