Monthly Events at Coto Japanese Academy

 

Each month we provide a series of cultural events for you to experience Japanese cooking, calligraphy, and cuisine.  We also produce a series of lunchtime Japanese practice events where you can eat lunch together with volunteer native speakers and practice what you are learning in the classroom.

Pera Pera Year-end Party!! 🎄Sat. Dec. 7th

Have you heard of the Japanese word “Perapera” ?
It is used to describe someone who speaks a language very well!
Coto’s Pera Pera Party is the perfect time for you to have a go at conversation in Japanese. Get the chance to practice your speaking with several Japanese native speakers and to chat about many topics in Japanese. During English speaking time… it will be your turn to be a teacher!
This is a relaxed event known as the Japanese “Bonenkai 忘年会” End of Year Party! We have a good time and talk about your 2019! For the first time, we are offering free-flowing-drinks 🙂

Bento Chat Hour – Japanese Practice Event

Looking for more opportunities to speak Japanese? Join us for Bento Chat!

Many of our students have asked us to provide more opportunities for speaking practice. We are proud to announce our Bento Chat Hour – Conversation Time.
We will be opening up the classrooms on the first floor during lunch for a Bento Chat where Upper Beginner to Intermediate students can practice their conversational skills with
Volunteer Native Japanese speakers.

*This event is only for current students and former students.
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to improve your Japanese conversation.

  • Dates: November 18th (Mon.), 29th (Fri.), 6th (Fri.), 13th (Fri.), 16th (Mon.)

Lunch Tour in Kagurazaka

Every month, we organize a lunch tour at one of the many delicious restaurants in Kagurazaka area.

Have you ever been to Kagurazaka?

Kagurazaka is an enchanting neighborhood located 5 minutes walking from the Coto Academy, where you can find many shops, fancy cafés, traditional and modern restaurants. Every month, we organize a lunch tour in one of the many delicious restaurants around this place. If you want to join us and discover Kagurazaka, mail us and make your reservation now!

Each month, we will visit different restaurants as follows:
  • Tori-Jaya (January, April, November)
*At Tori-Jaya, participants will be sharing a pot, therefore, those who have allergies or those who are vegetarian will not be able to join.
  • Kaga (February, May, July, September, late October)
  • Hanakagura (March, June, August, early October)
*The schedule may be modified.

Cooking Class

(Oshi Zushi/Shikai Maki/Inari&Temari)

 

There are many ways of preparing Japanese sushi and every month we organize a cooking class for you to learn more about it!

Each month, we will introduce the different types of sushi, “shikaimaki,” “oshizushi,” or “inari and temari“.

  • Shikaimaki (August, November, February, May)
  • Oshizushi (June, September, December, March)
  • Inari and Temari (July, October, January, April)

Calligraphy Class

If you are interested in learning how to draw each and every stroke in the Japanese Kanji character, this event is for you! Every month, Coto Academy will hold a calligraphy class. Learn the basics of calligraphy along with the artistic way of writing kanji!

This month, you can choose your favorite word and will be practicing on its Kanji characters. The instructor, Wakana Shingae, a professional calligrapher with extensive experience of working with Nippon Budōkan, Isetan Department Store and Amazon Prime. Grab this opportunity to experience the traditions of Japan and participate in our calligraphy class!
