With pair-dialogue sessions, practical examples, and explanations from our experienced teachers, lessons focus on practical spoken Japanese for daily life that will help you live comfortably while in Japan.

  • Who can join the intensive course?

    Students from all levels are accepted from total beginner to advanced.
  • What is the Intensive course curriculum like?

    We use a practical and proven method, classes cover aspects of all Japanese language skills, with a focus on speaking. Students are encouraged to be proactive in speaking Japanese and learning grammar structures early. We see the importance of learning beyond written theory and textbooks and want to make sure that our students are learning Japanese that they can actually use. Our certified Japanese teachers place importance on communication skills: conversation, presentation, and speaking publicly. You’ll be introduced to layers of Japanese culture, manners and aspects important to your life and work in Japan. We want to prepare you for the "real" Japan.
  • Who takes Japanese lessons at Coto? Who are Coto Students?

    Our Students are typically international residents that are a mix of working professionals, people who want to improve their career prospects or change careers and families of international business people. We do not provide student visas to learners who study with us. We have a very diverse student body with many students from the United States, Canada, France, Germany.  A wide range of ages from mid twenties - all the way to 70s. We do not provide student visas to our students.
  • How is the Course Divided? What levels are offered?

    Lessons are divided into beginner (N5-N4), intermediate (N3) and advanced (N2) at different levels. Each level lasts 4 weeks.
  • How many students are in your intensive Japanese course?

    Our lessons are small and friendly. With a maximum of 8 students, we focus on community learning. This allows you to participate in more conversations, build confidence in speaking Japanese and feel at ease with your peers. We find that having someone motivated alongside you will increase your motivation. The small class size allows you to receive extensive support and guidance from our professional language teachers. Having this cap allows our instructors to monitor your growth and give feedback — something that isnt possible in a large class. Most importantly, you will have more chances to speak Japanese with your classmates.  
  • When can I join the intensive course? How long are classes?

    You can join at the beginning of each month.

    When should you apply?

      (Applying for the course is best done at least 2 weeks prior in order to secure your space.)

    How long does the course last?

      The intensive course is divided by separate levels.  Each level last 4 weeks.

    What time are the classes?

      You can choose between morning and afternoon classes according to your own schedule. The morning course is from 9:10 to 12:00 ( Yokohama ).  9:30-12:20 (Iidabashi, Tokyo ) , and the afternoon class is from 14:10 to 17:00 at both locations.

  • Japanese Crash Course

    LEVEL: Total Beginner

    A four week crash course for absolute beginners to the Japanese language.


    No Japanese language experience needed. Our crash course is perfect for eager beginners, designed to teach you the basics of Japanese starting with hiragana and katakana. You will then move to common expressions that you can use immediately in your daily life. By the end of this course, you will be able to hold short conversations in Japanese in limited situations.

    Class Structure:


    The teaching method for this course focuses on learning key Japanese phrases and simple words with no explicit emphasis on grammar explanations.

    You will learn two to three key phrases per chapter of our materials through immersive usage.

    You will also learn the basics of the Japanese phoentic alphabet.

    Learning Goals:


    • Hiragana, katakana and basic Kanji introduction
    • Greetings and introducing yourself using basic common Japanese expressions
    • Give simple orders in a restaurants or shops
    • Ask directions in the street or train station
    • Talk about your impressions of Japan

    Learn the basics of Japanese communication


    Our beginner Japanese course is perfect for students who understand the fundamentals of hiragana, katakana, kanji characters and vocabulary.

    If you want to move past that point and learn the basics of conversational Japanese, you will enjoy this course.

    This course includes many opportunities for spoken role-plays and practice exercises, which encourage students to be confident in their ability to speak Japanese. You will be able to understand and hold regular conversations in Japanese.

    Classs Structure:


    Class is conducted in small groups with pair participation and spoken role-play. The class format is designed to encourage students to speak and interact confidently.

    12-week curriculum, with levels divided into 4 weeks and 3 terms. The course can be purchased as a package or individual weeks. By the end of this course, you will have learned roughly 150 Kanji symbols, 300 new vocabulary words, and 70 key sentences.

    Like our crash course and beginner levels, you will have many opportunities for role-plays. This will solidify what you learn and instill confidence in your ability to speak Japanese.

    In this transition course to an Advanced Japanese level, you will focus on understanding abstract and more difficult content in Japanese. You will also broaden your conversation to topics of interest and specialized fields. You will become able to express and defend your point of view. You will also get familiar in real business scenarios and use keigo.

    At this point, you are able to give suggestions, complaints and advice in more detail using reasons and complex sentence structure.

By the end of this course, you would have learned roughly 200 Kanji symbols, 300 new vocabulary words, and 70 key sentences. This is the perfect prep for our Japanese Advanced Course.

    In the advanced Japanese course, you will learn more abstract content that will allow you to carry on more sophisticated conversations, make negotiations and make professional requests.

    Your grammar and vocabulary will become proficient enough that you will be able to speak in-depth and objectively with native Japanese speakers. You can hold your own opinion when participating in discussions and complicated talks. Our teachers will also focus on business and current large-scale events.

    About this course:

    This course is split into 3 terms with each term being 4 weeks in length. The course can be purchased as a package or individual weeks. By the end of this course, you would have learned roughly 500 new Kanji symbols, 750 new vocabulary words, and 180 key sentences. The advanced course is the perfect prep for our Japanese Business Course.
