Where Our Students Come From
Coto Academy's Japanese student community spans every continent. More than 54% of our students come from North America and Europe. The majority of them are from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, China, South Korea, Germany, and Canada. The remainder comes from Asia, Oceania, South America, and Africa.
Student Community by Age Range
Our students span a wide range of ages. As a Japanese language school for adults, our largest group, aged 25-34, makes up 43% of students. But there is no "right age" to start learning Japanese. We teach adults at every stage, from their early 20s to retirees in their 60s and beyond.
Starting Japanese Level
Coto Academy offers Japanese lessons structured across 19 different levels, so you can join at whatever stage feels right for you. Most students start their journey at the beginner level, making up 53.05% of our community — so if you're starting from zero, you're in good company. We also welcome students who arrive with more intermediate or advanced Japanese ability, ready to keep building on what they already know.
Online vs. In-person Japanese Learning
Whether you're based in Japan or learning from anywhere in the world, Coto offers a way to study that fits your life. Our in-person classes at our Shinjuku, Shibuya, Iidabashi, Yokohama, or Minato campus give students the chance to learn face-to-face and build community in the classroom, while our online courses make it possible to study with the same teachers and curriculum from wherever you are.
Who Our Students Are
Our students aren't all here for the same reason. 29% are visiting on a tourist visa, fitting in lessons around their trip. 29% are working professionals studying business Japanese to grow their careers. The rest are permanent residents, working holiday visa holders, full-time students, or here as a dependent or spouse. Whatever brought you to Japan, there's a Coto course that fits you.
