Where to Get Paper Tickets
In Japan, there are two different types of train operators. The Japan East Railway Group (JR) and Tokyo Metro are the most famous in Tokyo. You can search for a one-day pass or more discounted tickets on their website.

Ticket Vending Machines

These ubiquitous machines are found at every train station and offer various ticket options. They are user-friendly, featuring English instructions and touch screens. All you need to do is select your destination, choose the ticket type (single or return), and pay the fare.
Sometimes, for local trains like JR or Metro, you will have to look for the price to get to the station in order to get the right ticket. Usually, a price will be written on the map above the ticket machine. Find the station you want to go to, check the price, hit it on the machine, and you are good to go!

Ticket Counters
If you’re unfamiliar with the machines or prefer human interaction, you can purchase tickets at the station’s ticket counter. Staff in bigger stations like Shibuya, Shinjuku, or Shinagawa are usually helpful and can provide guidance in English.

Convenience Stores
Selected convenience stores, such as Lawson and 7-Eleven, also sell train tickets for specific routes. This can be a convenient option if you’re already nearby and don’t want to queue at the station.
