Summer is an essential season in temperate climates. Beach vacations. Pool time. Long days, short nights, sunshine, and school holidays. Summer break is the ideal time for college students to participate in interesting activities that they may not have time to undertake during the school year. How is your summer break going? In Japan, the summer break started by the end of July and ends by the end of September.
Summer is almost ending in Japan! But don’t be too sad that the break is almost ending. To perfectly sum up your summer break, why not plan carefully to make your summer break extra productive? Due to the pandemic and the state of emergency, most students in Japan spend their break at home, including me. I would like to introduce 5 ways to make your summer break extra productive.
Before that, if you haven’t checked it out, read our guide on how to stay cool during the summer in Japan!
1. Learn a new skill that you can add to your CV/ Resume.
- Beyond your major, broaden your skill set. Look for courses that are applicable to the sector or industry you wish to work in.
- For foreign students living in Japan, having extra time to study JLPT during the summer break is perfect chance to pass your desired level of JLPT.
- Also, if you are preparing for job hunting in Japan, being able to speak business Japanese is also another skill you must have for job hunting.
2. Learn another language.
- Learning a new language will always count as a meaning addition to your resume and eventually help you in your future career.
- Learning a new language is not only just fun but also give you much more opportunities in your future professional life.
- What language to learn and master depends on your preference but if you are a foreigner living in Japan, the summer break is the perfect time for you to master Japanese.
3. Get an internship.
- Put what you’ve learnt in the classroom into practice. A summer internship is a perfect way to learn more about a business or industry while also gaining actual work experience to add to your résumé.
- Getting an internship is a great method to make important connections and figure out if a career is suited for you.
4. Job Shadows
- Job shadowing allows you to follow an expert in your field to gain a deeper grasp of not only the wide view of that career but also the day-to-day activities.
- A job shadow can continue for the entire summer or just one day. Sometimes you’ll have to settle for an interview, which gives you the opportunity to ask someone in your desired area questions about their work.
- It will give you an opportunity to question someone in your desired field about their education, career history, and present job duties.
5. Have Online Gathering with Your Friends
- If you have been too busy during the semester and could not visit them due to the pandemic and the state of emergency, why not have online gathering through Zoom or Google Meets? Or whatever you are comfortable with!
- Catching up with your old friends will help you relieve stress and have fun even while staying at home.
