Why did you choose ISI to study Japanese?
I was comparing ISI with other schools when I first started, but ISI stood out the most because it seemed like the school cares for the student’s future goals and careers. It’s not just about “Come to Japan and study here”.
How is your experience learning Japanese at ISI Takadanobaba so far?
It was difficult at first, especially because we were doing it online. It was nicer when I came to Japan and study here in person.
What were the lessons like?
I think the lessons are at a good pace, too. There are slower and faster days, but ultimately, I think everything is paced perfectly. There’s no overbearing competition in class, too. You’re a part of the class and everyone wants to learn together. The one language we all speak is Japanese, so even speaking with classmates is learning!
What’s the strongest point about ISI Japanese Language School?
It feels like there’s a community in school, and the school really pushes you to speak Japanese and be part of society. It doesn’t feel like you’re just here to come to school. You get to meet your classmates, make connections and have a good time.
It’s also a big school, so there are different people in different classes. Even during breaks, you can just walk down the hall and meet new people.
Speaking of which, what are your plans to go after school?
I studied computer science at a university before I came here, so I’m hoping to go to graduate school or get a job in the field.
How does the school help you with that?
Actually, I just sent my homeroom teacher my research proposal for my graduate school application! It’s great because they give feedback on it and give me tips on how to improve. Career-wise, they’ve helped me build my resume. The school has a specific portal that sends out part-time jobs for people who are interested.
What advice would you give to someone who’s considering to go study in Japan?
Definitely start the process early. It takes a lot of time to apply and prepare for your arrival, and doing this as soon as possible can be a big difference.
How long have you taught Japanese?
I’ve been a Japanese teacher for 12 years!
What’s your philosophy on teaching Japanese?
Make difficult things easy.
What’s a unique feature of ISI that’s different from other schools?
Our diversity. ISl is a very international school with students from over 50 countries. We have a stimulating environment where you can come into contact with various cultures and customs on a daily basis — not just Japanese. You’re going to communicate not only with people from Japan but also with people from various countries as classmates.
How would you describe the students at ISI?
One of the characteristics of ISI students is that many of them are highly motivated to work hard toward their future goals. Some students aim to go to university, vocational school, or find a job, but they are highly motivated to achieve their goals and work hard in class.
What’s some advice you would give to students?
As you progress from intermediate to advanced, you tend to lose your motivation to learn because don’t feel like you’re making progress. This is where you need to persevere. Being in an environment where everyone is motivated definitely helps too because you’ll share the same purpose and work hard with each other through friendly rivalry.
