Let’s see today, how you would say “shotgun wedding” in Japanese. Well, with the expression: “dekikon” \u300c\u3067\u304d\u3053\u3093\u300d\u300c\u3067\u304d\u5a5a\u300d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This expression describes a wedding<\/a> that is or was arranged to avoid embarrassment due to an unplanned pregnancy rather than out of the desire of the participants!\u3000<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can literally translate as “we already made (a baby) marriage”. Have you heard it before?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, let’s take a look at the interesting construction of this Japanese slang word. The first part, “deki” comes from the sentence \u300c\uff08\u5b50\u3069\u3082\u304c\uff09\u3067\u304d<\/strong>\u3066\u3057\u307e\u3063\u305f\u300d which means “got pregnant” or “gave birth”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the sentence carries a very negative nuance, it is closer in meaning to the expression ” to get knocked up”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second part, “kon” originates from the word “kekkon” \u300c\u3051\u3063\u3053\u3093\u300d\u300c\u7d50\u5a5a\u300d which means marriage. Finally, the both parts “dekikon” were combined as an abbreviation for the following sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
