It&#8217;s ubiquitous in phrasebooks and textbooks but as you might have noticed living in Japan, the Japanese people don&#8217;t use sayonara in everyday conversation that much.<\/p>\n<div id=\"Casual\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>So what expressions are used to say farewell, if not &#8220;\u3055\u3088\u306a\u3089&#8221; (sayonara)? It depends a lot on the context and the person you are talking to. To understand it better, let&#8217;s have a look at some natural Japanese!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Casual Conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The following expressions are used casually and if you enjoy watching anime or read manga then you&#8217;ve probably heard them before. You will typically use these expressions when you don&#8217;t know when you will meet your friend again.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u3058\u3083\u3042\u306d \u30fc See you<\/li>\n<li>\u307e\u305f\u306d \u30fc See you<\/li>\n<li>\u3058\u3083\u3042\u3001\u307e\u305f \u30fc See you<\/li>\n<li>\u30d0\u30a4\u30d0\u30a4 \u30fc Bye bye<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you do know that you will be seeing your friends again you can mention the time when you will meet again.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\u307e\u305f\u3042\u3057\u305f \u30fc (See you tomorrow)<\/li>\n<li>\u307e\u305f\u3089\u3044\u3057\u3085\u3046 \u30fc (See you next week)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"In\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>In Formal Context&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In business situations, different expressions are used that emphasize the hard work done by all that day.<br \/>\u304a\u3064\u304b\u308c\u3055\u307e\u3067\u3057\u305f: used in the working place,\u00a0expresses the appreciation of\u00a0your co-workers\u2019 hard work when you leave for the day. The closest English translation would be \u201cthank you for your hard work\u201d or more simply saying \u201cyou worked hard\u201d.
