Are you coming to Japan but haven\u2019t started studying Japanese yet? Well, here’s one lesson you should learn \u2013 how to order a beer in Japanese!<\/p>\n

Step 1: Finding a Bar<\/h3>\n

First, head out to a local izakaya (\u5c45\u9152\u5c4b\u3044\u3056\u304b\u3084<\/rt><\/ruby>), a casual restaurant that is perfect to order small dishes to be shared with your drinking companions. You\u2019ll find izakayas all over Japan, ranging from cheap chains to classy establishments with private rooms.<\/p>\n

As you enter the floor staff will welcome you with a very loud and enthusiastic \u3044\u3063\u3089\u3057\u3083\u3044\u307e\u305b, which translates to ‘welcome’.<\/p>\n

Also if you’re unsure of what to order at an Izakaya, try pointing to the item on the menu and simply ask “What is this on the Menu<\/a>?” Though uncommon, some Japanese izakayas still do not adopt the habit of having photos accompany the items that they are selling. In this case, it would be best to ask if you’d like to avoid eating the innards of a chicken, pig or even cow!<\/p>\n

Step 2: Ordering your Beer<\/h3>\n

Japan\u2019s five domestic beer makers, Asahi, Kirin, Suntory, Sapporo and and Orion dominate 92% of the market, so you will have access to a lot of choices. Japanese people usually start by drinking draft beer as soon as they\u2019re seated which you can order by saying:<\/p>\n

\u3068\u308a\u3042\u3048\u305a\u751f\u306a\u307e<\/rt><\/ruby>\u30d3\u30eb\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3002(I’ll start with a beer please.)<\/p>\n

Toriaezu means ‘for now’, ‘nama biru’ is draft beer and ‘kudasai’ stands for please in this context. You can even shorten it to just ‘biru’ but the waiter might ask you what kind of beer you would like. If your Japanese is as good as your waiter\u2019s English, you would better avoid this situation.<\/p>\n

Most common chains make the effort to include a few English translated menus but if the menu is in Japanese you will have to take a leap of faith and make a random choice.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not a beer person, that\u2019s perfectly fine, you\u2019ll find that izakaya offer an array of beverages. Here’s a few sample words to use:<\/p>\n

Alcoholic drinks:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u65e5\u672c\u9152\u306b\u3063\u307d\u3093\u3057\u3085<\/rt><\/ruby> – Nihonshu
\n\u6885\u9152\u3046\u3081\u3057\u3085<\/rt><\/ruby> – Umeshu
\n\u713c\u914e\u3057\u3087\u3046\u3061\u3085\u3046<\/rt><\/ruby> – Shochu
\n\u30cf\u30a4\u30dc\u30fc\u30eb – High ball
\n\u30a6\u30a3\u30b9\u30ad\u30fc – Whisky
\n\u30b8\u30f3 – Jin
\n\u30ef\u30a4\u30f3 – Wine<\/p>\n

Non-alcoholic drinks:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u30b3\u30fc\u30e9 – Coca cola
\n\u304a\u8336\u3061\u3083<\/rt><\/ruby> – tea
\n\u70cf\u9f8d\u8336\u3046\u30fc\u308d\u3093\u3061\u3083<\/rt><\/ruby> – Oolong tea
\n\u30b8\u30e5\u30fc\u30b9 – Juice
\n\u304a\u6c34\u307f\u305a<\/rt><\/ruby> – Water<\/p>\n

Step 3: Toast!<\/h3>\n

Fresh beers are on the table, you\u2019re with your good friends, it\u2019s time for a loud toast! In Japan, it\u2019s important to cheer first with a loud \u4e7e\u676f\u304b\u3093\u3071\u3044<\/rt><\/ruby> and then have a drink. It\u2019s considered rude to start drinking before doing so.<\/p>\n

If we take a closer look at the etymology, \u4e7e\u676f is constructed with the kanji ‘to dry’ and ‘cup (of alcoholic beverage)’, so it literally means ‘let\u2019s dry our cup’.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Ask for more Beer<\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re all set with your first beer, or any other drink, you can keep them coming with a very convenient expression:<\/p>\n

\u304a\u4ee3\u304b<\/rt><\/ruby>\u308f\u308a\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3002(One more, please.)<\/p>\n

Usually a quick look at your table should suffice for the waiter to know what to bring you. If they look confused, however, you\u2019ll have to step in. ‘Okawari’ meaning ‘another’ can also be used for food too.<\/p>\n

If you would like to switch to another drink, master the following phrase:<\/p>\n

Bonus: Toilet Break<\/h3>\n

Down a few drinks, and you will probably need to take a trip to the toilet. If you can\u2019t find the sign anywhere, you can ask your way around with a very easy sentence:<\/p>\n

\u3059\u307f\u307e\u305b\u3093\u3001\u30c8\u30a4\u30ec\u306f\u3069\u3053\u3067\u3059\u304b\u3002(Excuse me, where is the toilet?)<\/p>\n

You might be interested to know that the Japanese language has three words for toilet. \u4fbf\u6240\u3079\u3093\u3058\u3087<\/rt><\/ruby>, \u624b\u6d17\u3066\u3042\u3089<\/rt><\/ruby>\u3044, and the more common \u30c8\u30a4\u30ec.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t feel like speaking Japanese at all, a simple “\u30c8\u30a4\u30ec\u306f…” will do the trick as well.<\/p>\n

Step 5: Paying for your Beer<\/h3>\n

Time\u2019s up! You\u2019ve had your fill and are ready to head home, or maybe continue the party to a second bar called a \u4e8c\u6b21\u4f1a\u306b\u3058\u304b\u3044<\/rt><\/ruby>.<\/p>\n

Whichever path you choose, before you leave you will have to ask for the bill. To do that you can say:<\/p>\n

\u304a\u4f1a\u8a08\u304b\u3044\u3051\u3044<\/rt><\/ruby>\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3002(The bill please.)<\/p>\n

In Japan, it\u2019s common to split the bill equally and to avoid discussing over who ate what. Once you’ve settled up you can let the waiter know you appreciate the meal by saying:<\/p>\n

\u3054\u3061\u305d\u3046\u3055\u307e\u3067\u3057\u305f. (Thank you very much (for the meal).)<\/p>\n
