The region consists of 19 cities and received its name from the prefectural capital, Nagano City (\u9577\u91ce\u5e02).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nagano-ken is prominent for its \u201cmountainous prowess\u201d and the assets that that affords. It holds nine of Japan\u2019s 12 tallest peaks and encompasses much of the areas of the Kita-Alps, Chuo-Alps and Minami-Alps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extensive highlands of Nagano offer respite during the sticky months with summer resorts such as Kamikochi, world-class winter sport opportunities at ski resorts like Hakuba, and year-round enchantment with the monkey-enticing hot springs of Yamanouchi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nagano-city\">Nagano&nbsp;City&nbsp;(<ruby>\u9577\u91ce\u5e02<rp>(<\/rp><rt>\u306a\u304c\u306e\u3057<\/rt><rp>)<\/rp><\/ruby>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nagano City is located in the north of the prefecture and started to develop during the Nara period after the construction of its first Buddhist Temple. Similarly, to Sapporo, Nagano gained worldwide recognition from hosting the Winter Olympic Games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then it has become a popular tourist attraction for its religious sites and &#8211; &#8211; attractions linked to a former Ninja School!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supposedly, the Togakure Ninja School was founded after a warrior fled to Mie Prefecture\u2019s Iga City \u2013 Japan\u2019s \u201cninja capital\u201d &#8211; to escape a losing war. It was there that he was able to acquire his ninja knowledge before setting up camp in Nagano and establishing the The Togakure Ninja School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presently, his legacy is commemorated at The Togakure Ninpo Museum (<ruby>\u6238\u96a0\u6d41\u5fcd\u6cd5\u8cc7\u6599\u9928<rp>(<\/rp><rt>\u3068\u304c\u304f\u3057\u308a\u3085\u3046\u306b\u3093\u307d\u3046\u3057\u308a\u3087\u3046\u304b\u3093<\/rt><rp>)<\/rp><\/ruby>) and The Kid\u2019s Ninja Village (\u30c1\u30d3\u30c3\u5b50\u5fcd\u8005\u6751).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/ninja.jpg\" alt=\"Ninja Nagano Prefecture Japan\"><br>The most prominent religious sites of Nagano City are Buddhist temple, Zenko-ji (<ruby>\u5584\u5149\u5bfa<rp>(<\/rp><rt>\u305c\u3093\u3053\u3046\u3058<\/rt><rp>)<\/rp><\/ruby>), and Shinto shrine, Togakushi-jinja (<ruby>\u6238\u96a0\u795e\u793e<rp>(<\/rp><rt>\u3068\u304c\u304f\u3057\u3058\u3093\u3058\u3083<\/rt><rp>)<\/rp><\/ruby>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buddhism was first practised in Japan shortly after Koreans brought Buddhist sutras into the country in the 6th century. At that time, there was only one sect of Buddhism, but this rapidly changed during the Nara period &#8211; when six schools of Buddhism emerged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zenko-ji temple was constructed before Buddhism in Japan split into sects and is famous for housing the first Buddhist statue every brought to Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Togakushi-jinja is about 20km from Zenko-ji and Nagano City\u2019s centre. It consists of a lower, upper and middle shrine which are dispersed along Mount Togakushi in approximate 2 km intervals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name \u201c\u6238\u96a0\u201d means \u201chiding door\u201d and this name was allocated to <a href=\"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/ja\/love-shrine-tokyo-tokyo-daijingu-shrine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the shrine<\/a>, the town and the mountain based upon a famous legend concerning Sun Goddess Amaterasu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-matsumoto-castle\">Matsumoto Castle (<ruby>\u677e\u672c\u5e02<rp>(<\/rp><rt>\u307e\u3064\u3082\u3068\u3057<\/rt><rp>)<\/rp><\/ruby>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9384 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Matsumoto.jpg\" alt=\"Matsumoto Castle Nagano Prefecture Japan\"><br>Matsumoto Castle (\u677e\u672c\u57ce) can be found in the centre of the prefecture in Matsumoto City (\u677e\u672c\u5e02). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are five castles in Japan that have structures designated as \u201cNational Treasures\u201d and \u677e\u672c\u57ce is one of them. Its construction started in 592 and took around 20 years to complete. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being built on flatland, instead of elevated on a hill or mountain, the castle captures your attention even at worst of times. Its striking black exterior and vibrant red bridge juxtapositioned against the mountains really is something special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kamikochi\">Kamikochi (<ruby>\u4e0a\u9ad8\u5730<rp>(<\/rp><rt>\u304b\u307f\u3053\u3046\u3061<\/rt><rp>)<\/rp><\/ruby>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamikochi is a popular mountain valley resort located within Chubu-Sangaku National Park, in the Hida Mountain Range.
