In the “E” edition of the “AIUE O” blog, we would like to introduce a <\/span>Japanese saying . <\/span><\/span>
\nHave you ever heard of the saying “En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi?” <\/span><\/span>
\nExample) <\/span><\/span>
\nA: “What do I do? I’m a wedding planner. I run around doing behind-the-scenes work at <\/span><\/span>
\nweddings. It’s a dull job but it’s also a hard job.” <\/span><\/span>
\nB: “Really? But you’re working to help a very special once-in-a-lifetime event happen, <\/span><\/span>
\nright? <\/span><\/span>
\nWhat an amazing job! You’re an “En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi”!” <\/span>A <\/span><\/span>
\n: “It sounds nice when you put it that way. It makes my job seem worthwhile. <\/span>” <\/span>“En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi” is “Someone supporting entire the house from under the <\/span>floor”, which translates to ” a person(or a job), that supports someone\/something from <\/span>a place where no one is watching.” Such people\/jobs are an integral part of a company, <\/span>and society in general. <\/span>There are many examples of such hardworking people hidden from the limelight, <\/span>like people who work backstage at a musical or staff members who support F-1 racers. <\/span>If you think about it, only a handful of people are actually in the limelight and <\/span>the great majority of people are those who support such people in the background. <\/span>The great thing about Japanese society is that these “supporters” are recognized and <\/span>appreciated. The term “En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi” is used when praising others or <\/span>when one tries to make themselves appealing to others. <\/span>*When praising others: <\/span>“Needless to say, our leader Yamada-san and his great efforts contributed to the success <\/span>of this project. But we cannot forget about Yoshioka-san, who supported us as the <\/span>“En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi”. <\/span>*Making yourself appealing to others (During a job interview): <\/span>“I was one of the managers of our college’s ice hockey team. <\/span>As an “En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi”, I supported them in the background by managing <\/span>the players’ health as well as their schedules, while they won 3 national competitions. <\/span>The underlying feeling we have when we talk about others is the feeling of <\/span>gratitude we have for them. Let’s not forget to tell these people “Thank you, I’m grateful <\/span>” like \u672c\u5f53\u306b\u3042\u308a\u304c\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002 \u611f\u8b1d\u3002 . <\/span>Are there any “En-no-shita-no-chikara-mochi”s around you?
