{"id":62790,"date":"2018-03-26T15:34:19","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T06:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/love-shrine-tokyo-tokyo-daijingu-shrine\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T16:57:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T07:57:31","slug":"love-shrine-tokyo-tokyo-daijingu-shrine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/ja\/love-shrine-tokyo-tokyo-daijingu-shrine\/","title":{"rendered":"Tokyo Daijingu: The Shrine of Love in the Heart of Tokyo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Just a 3-minute walk from Coto Academy, <strong>Tokyo Daijingu \u6771\u4eac\u5927\u795e\u5bae<\/strong> ( \u3068\u3046\u304d\u3087\u3046\u3000\u3060\u3044\u3058\u3093\u3050 ) &#8211; located in Iidabashi &#8211; is one of the five &#8220;Major Shrines&#8221; of Tokyo, along with Meiji Jingu, Yasukuni Jinja, Hie Jinja, and Ohkunitama Jinja. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today it is well known throughout Japan as a lucky place to pray for blessings in <a href=\"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/japanese-word-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your love life.<\/a> It is popular with couples who want to stay together and singles who want to find a lover.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"menulist\"><a href=\"#The-History-of-Tokyo-Daijingu\">History of Tokyo Daijingu<\/a><br><a href=\"#Why-did-it-become-popular-with-Lovers?\">How it Became Popular With Lovers<br><\/a><a href=\"#Etiquette - How to purify yourself when entering Tokyo Daijingu\">Etiquette (How to purify Yourself)<\/a><br><a href=\"#Hours-and-Location\">Hours and Location<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"The-History-of-Tokyo-Daijingu\">The History of Tokyo Daijingu<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Edo Period (1603-1867) it was the wish of every common civilian in Japanese society to travel on an&nbsp;<i>Okage Mairi &#8211; \u304a\u852d\u53c2\u308a or&nbsp; &#8220;<\/i><em>Blessing Pilgrimage&#8221; to the Grand Shrine of Ise in Mie prefecture Japan.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Grand Shrine of Ise is dedicated to&nbsp;<b>Amaterasu-\u014dmikami<\/b>&nbsp;(<span lang=\"ja\" xml:lang=\"ja\">\u5929\u7167\u5927\u795e\uff0f\u5929\u7167\u5927\u5fa1\u795e\uff0f\u5929\u7167\u7687\u5927\u795e<\/span>), or&nbsp;<b>\u014chirume-no-muchi-no-kami<\/b>&nbsp;(<span lang=\"ja\" xml:lang=\"ja\">\u5927\u65e5\u5b41\u8cb4\u795e<\/span>) &#8211; or simply Amaretsu if you wan&#8217;t a convenient way to shorten it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amaretsu is the goddess of Sun and the Universe &#8211; and a major deity in the Shinto religion.&nbsp;According to the&nbsp;<i>Kojiki<\/i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>Nihon Shoki<\/i>&nbsp;in&nbsp;Japanese mythology, the&nbsp;Emperors of Japan&nbsp;are considered to be&nbsp;direct descendants&nbsp;of Amaterasu. (quoted from Wikipedia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is recorded that in 1771 over 2 Million people made the pilgrimage to the grand shrine of Ise in Mie. (That would be similar to around 30 million Americans visiting Disney world or the grand Canyon today &#8211; about 10% of the total population).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1880, the Imperial family decided to approve the enshrinement of Amaretsu in Hibiya so that others could worship at a satellite campus without having to make the pilgrimage to Mie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cotoacademy.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/03\/daijingu-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79798\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The shrine is especially popular in the daytime with single office ladies looking for love. Following this &#8211; Hibiya Daijingu performed the first public Shinto <a href=\"\/?p=76898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wedding ceremony.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the great Kanto <a href=\"\/?p=77074\">earthquake<\/a> &#8211; Hibiya Daijingu was relocated to Iidabashi &#8211; but because of its heritage it retained the prestige of being the originator of Shinto wedding ceremonies for the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, there are several other deities enshrined here that are responsible for the growth of humans and their flourishing &#8211; you may have seen a water fountain with wooden ladles like the one above.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is called a&nbsp;<i><b>ch\u014dzubachi<\/b><\/i>&nbsp;(<span lang=\"ja\">\u624b\u6c34\u9262<\/span>) and is an important part of any shrine visit.<br>If there is no one waiting or currently using &#8211; walk up to the&nbsp;<i><b>ch\u014dzubachi<\/b><\/i>&nbsp;(<span lang=\"ja\">\u624b\u6c34\u9262<\/span>) and do the following -\\<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Note: After step five you have to put water in your mouth.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not required that you do this for good manners &#8211; but for the fully authentic experience &#8211; we recommend it!)<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Purify Yourself &#8211; Entering a Shinto Shrine<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the wooden ladle with your right hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill the ladle by holding it under the running water until about half full.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour the &#8220;pure&#8221; water over your left hand &#8211; make sure you cover all of your skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now take the ladle into your left hand &#8211; refill it half way &#8211; and &#8220;purify&#8221; your right hand by doing the same.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch hands again so that your right hand is now holding the ladle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refill the ladle under the running water &#8211; then pour the &#8220;pure&#8221; water into your left hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink the &#8220;pure&#8221; water from your left hand &#8211; and swish it around in your mouth &#8211; cleansing your mouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spit the water out onto the rocks and grass in front of the&nbsp;<i><b>ch\u014dzubachi<\/b><\/i>&nbsp;(<span lang=\"ja\">\u624b\u6c34\u9262<\/span>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refill the ladle &#8211; then tip the handle down so that the &#8220;pure&#8221; water runs down the handle and your hands &#8211; &#8220;purifying&#8221; the ladle for the next user.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place the ladle back where you found it in the same position.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Helpful Tip:<\/strong> If you forget what to do, wait for a local and watch them.
