A, who is a university student, told me this story the other day:
\n\u201cI had an interview with a company today. My university lecturer had told me to \u201cgo dressed tekit\u014d (\u9069\u5f53),\u201d so I wore jeans and a T-shirt. But I noticed that the interviewer had a really shocked look on his\/her face the moment I entered the room. I ended up feeling really awkward. What did I do wrong?\u201d
\nJust as she had been told to by her lecturer, A went wearing \u201c(\u9069\u5f53\u306a\u670d) tekit\u014d clothes,\u201d so what was the problem? The problem was that she did not know that the word \u201ctekit\u014d\u201d has two meanings – and she chose the wrong one.<\/p>\n

Meanings of Tekito<\/h2>\n

1. Just right, correct, appropriate\/suitable<\/h3>\n

Tekito<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cTekit\u014d\u201d can be used in the following way, which has a positive meaning: \u201cTo act or select in a way that matches the atmosphere or the purpose.\u201d
\n\u00b7 Find a place that\u2019s suitable for entertaining guests from overseas
\n\u00b7 (On an exam question) Select the best (=correct) answer to the following question
\n\u00b7 I\u2019m looking for someone who\u2019d be just the right kind of person for a marriage partner.<\/p>\n

2. Irresponsible, any old way, without thinking much<\/h3>\n

Someone did a tekito job on this sidewalk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This usage of the word has the negative meaning of \u201cshowing that you are doing something but just on the surface level, without the content to go with it.\u201d It is completely the opposite meaning to that of number 1 above. Let\u2019s take a look at some examples.
\n\u30fbThey got mad at me when I wrote the report up any old way
\n\u30fb(When taking an exam) I didn\u2019t know the answer so I just picked an answer without giving it any thought
\n\u30fbThis company is full of irresponsible people. There is no one you can count on.
\nBy the way, the \u201ctekit\u014d clothes\u201d from the story above is close to the idea of \u201cnot thinking about it much\u201d from meaning #2, in the sense of clothes that are casual or as one pleases.
\nI think you understand the difference by now. The lecturer was using \u201ctekit\u014d\u201d with meaning #1, intending to communicate the idea of \u201csomewhat formal clothes, appropriate to an interview,\u201d whereas A interpreted this as meaning #2: \u201ccasual clothes that you don\u2019t think about too much.\u201d This kind of mistake happens often, so do take care with this word.
\nYou will usually be able to distinguish whether the word is being used in the first or the second meaning from the context or the way that the other person is talking. Even so, it would be best for the person who is giving the instructions to try to communicate as clearly as possible, so that there are no misunderstandings. Because if you give tekit\u014d instructions, it can result in atrocious things happening later!<\/p>\n
