Although this word is rarely found in textbooks, it comes up often in Japanese conversation. In this blog we will show you what &#8220;Naruhodo&#8221; means in Japanese and how to use it in conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-naruhodo-mean\">What Does &#8220;Naruhodo&#8221; Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark> <em>Naruhodo<\/em> means &#8220;I understand&#8221; or &#8220;I see.&#8221; While you may have often heard that &#8220;Soudesuka&#8221; (<mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u305d\u3046\u3067\u3059\u304b<\/mark>) or &#8220;Sokka&#8221; (<mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u305d\u3063\u304b<\/mark>) is how to say &#8216;I see,&#8217; it is slightly different from <em>Naruhodo<\/em> (<mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While <em>sokka<\/em> or <em>soudesuka<\/em> certainly can be used to say &#8216;I see&#8217;, <em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark><\/em> adds an extra nuance. <em>Soudesuka\/sokka<\/em> is more neutral, while <em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark><\/em> conveys a sense of agreement and a more nuanced understanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use <em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark><\/em> when you learn something new or get information that you did not previously have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Soudesuka<\/em> and <em>Sokka<\/em> can also come across as cold, whereas <em><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark><\/em> can be used as a more warm response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-use-naruhodo\">How to Use &#8220;Naruhodo&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word <em>naruhodo<\/em> can be used in many different situations. You can use <em>naruhodo<\/em> in a polite context or informal context. Let&#8217;s look at some examples of how to use it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u3042\uff01\u305d\u3046\u3044\u3046\u3053\u3068\u304b\uff01\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069\u306d\uff01<\/mark><br><em>A! Souiu koto ka! Naruhodo ne!<\/em><br>Oh! That&#8217;s what you mean! I see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of <em>\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/em> in the above example conveys both a sense of understanding and of friendliness. It also expresses that the speaker has gained knowledge about something they did not know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at another example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">A: \u58ca\u308c\u3061\u3083\u3063\u305f\u304b\u3089\u8fd4\u54c1\u3057\u305f\u304b\u3063\u305f\u3082\u306e\u3067\u3059\u3002<br>B: \u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069\u3002<\/mark><br><em>A: Kowarechatta kara henpin shitakatta mono desu<\/em>\u3002<br><em>B: Naruhodo<\/em>\u3002<br>A: I wanted to return (this) because it broke.<br>B: I see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this exchange,  person B expresses their understanding in response to person A&#8217;s statement with <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This situation is a more formal one, but <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u306a\u308b\u307b\u3069<\/mark> can still be used in the same way.
