At university Sawako Kitayama majored in linguistics. She later worked for a shipping company while studying Portuguese in Rio de Janeiro. This is where she became interested in teaching Japanese, so she returned to Japan where she has worked as a Japanese language teacher since 2003.
I think people have various language goals relating to work, shopping, studying, dating, and living in Japan. I constantly bear in mind my students thoughts regarding, “What would make me happy if I could do it in Japanese?” and then aim to provide the information that is most useful to them. I think that as well as teaching useful subject matter, to the same extent, making students think, “I had fun today”, and “I’m looking forward to next time” is also very important
