Fun learning Japanese  = Effective learning Japanese

Pascal, Private Lessons / Elementary / France

Although I tried to study on my own, I realised that I needed more structure and guidance with my learning so decided to take lessons. My motivation to learn revolves around three basic human needs:

–     Communication: with my family in Japan, as my wife is Japanese, and day to day interactions,

–     Integration in society: being able to feel at home in japan, and contribute positively to society

–     Culture appreciation: being able to achieve greater understanding of the Japanese culture (art, people, etc.).

I studied Japanese a few years ago, but without motivation as I was not planning to live in Japan. My level was still very basic 6 months ago when I joined the school, mostly conversational as I never attempted to learn Kanji in the past.

Having identified my requirements (class schedule, location, class type, cost) I searched for schools on the internet. I short-listed three schools meeting my requirements and visited each school. My final decision was based on the quality of the experience during the initial visit to each school.

I believe that learning Japanese in a positive, enjoyable environment is much more effective, and for me ‘fun learning Japanese’ = ‘effective learning Japanese’. In summary, I enjoyed the interaction with the Coto Japanese Academy (formerly ILS) staff I met during my initial visit, and the school met my requirements, so decided to join the school.

The lessons have been enjoyable and effective. The pace has enabled me to also get myself more ready for the JLPT N4 exam which I plan to take in July this year.

Based on feedback received, and my own assessment, I feel that I have significantly improved over the last 6 months. More importantly, I have become increasingly motivated to continue to learn. For me, learning Japanese is a“marathon” not a “100m run”, and the ability to remain motivated over a long period of time is a critical success factor overall.

The school fits my requirements well so would think that anyone with similar requirements would find Coto Academy (formerly ILS) most suitable. My goals can be summarized as: continue to learn Japanese, improve communication in Japanese, and challenge myself with JLPT exam N2 one day !
